Choosing a worktop is rarely about a single number on a spec sheet. Granite and porcelain (more precisely, large sintered slabs sold under names such as Neolith, Dekton and Laminam) both make excellent kitchen surfaces, yet they behave differently in ways that matter over years of daily use. This is a working comparison, not a sales pitch: what each material actually is, where it earns its price, and where it asks for compromise.

What each material really is

Granite is an igneous stone, quarried in blocks and cut into slabs, typically 20 or 30 mm thick. Every slab is a genuine record of how the rock crystallised, so no two are identical. Sintered porcelain is engineered: mineral powders, clays and pigments pressed under high pressure and fired at roughly 1200 degrees Celsius. The result is a dense, homogeneous panel, usually 12 mm thick, produced in very large formats up to around 320 by 160 cm.

Hardness, heat and daily wear

On the Mohs scale granite sits around 6 to 7, hard enough to resist most kitchen knives and everyday abrasion. Sintered porcelain is harder still, commonly rated 7 or above, and is close to unscratchable in normal use. Both tolerate heat well: you can set a hot pan on either without scorching. Porcelain is the more forgiving of thermal shock, while granite, being natural, can in rare cases develop a hairline crack if abused. The trade-off is impact: porcelain’s thinness makes edges and corners vulnerable to chipping if struck hard, whereas granite’s mass is more resilient at the edge.

Porosity, stains and acids

This is where the materials diverge most clearly. Granite has a water absorption of roughly 0.2 to 0.5 percent, low but not zero, so it needs periodic sealing to resist oil, wine and citrus. A well sealed granite worktop is very practical; a neglected one can stain. Porcelain is effectively non-porous, with absorption near 0.1 percent or below, needs no sealing, and shrugs off acids, UV and household chemicals. For a kitchen that sees lemon, red wine and turmeric daily, that resistance is a real advantage.

Cost, fabrication and installation

Prices overlap heavily and depend on the specific stone or brand. Rare exotic granites can cost as much as premium porcelain; common granites are often cheaper. Fabrication differs: porcelain’s large format means fewer joints on an island, but cutting and handling the thin, brittle slab demands specialist tooling and careful transport. Mitred edges on porcelain reveal the thin body, so a fabricator builds up the profile, and the seam can show a fine line. Granite is heavier and more familiar to most workshops.

Aesthetics and material honesty

Granite offers depth: real crystals, movement and a surface that reads as stone because it is stone. Porcelain offers control: consistent colour, precise veining and finishes from matte to polished, though the decoration is a printed layer over a body of uniform colour, which becomes visible at a cut edge.

How to choose

Choose granite when you want authentic natural character, generous thickness and are content with a simple sealing routine. Choose porcelain when you want a large, seamless, non-porous surface with maximum stain and acid resistance, and can accept a printed aesthetic and careful edge detailing. Both are honourable choices; the right one depends on how you cook and what you want the surface to say.
